In the rural commune of Vinaninkarena, located about 230 kilometers south of Antananarivo, the village of Antanambao benefited from a project to build a preschool and primary school. This initiative was led by the association Les Enfants de Madagascar in partnership with the Foundation Unlimited.

A community effort to rebuild the village school

The village, made up of several hamlets and difficult to access—especially during the rainy season—is inhabited by a predominantly agricultural population with modest incomes. The existing public school, which served 110 students and 5 teachers, was in a state of advanced disrepair.

After several site visits, it was decided not to renovate the existing buildings but to construct two new buildings with six classrooms and a library. The project was locally supported by the parents’ association and the association Vovona Soa Lombanana.

Funding, coordination, and local engagement: The keys to the project

The association Les Enfants de Madagascar has been working since 1996 to support young people and the most disadvantaged, particularly in the field of education. Its projects include sponsorships, renovation or construction work, the creation of libraries, and the distribution of school supplies.

The Foundation Unlimited joined forces with the association to make this project a reality, which involved building two new school buildings and renovating existing ones. Newrest’s foundation contributed €21,000 to the project’s funding.

The local community provided the materials, while the Foundation Unlimited covered labor and architectural services.

The new buildings include a total of seven classrooms and offer students a suitable learning environment. The inauguration took place in the presence of stakeholders, welcomed by the local community. The event brought together the entire village and featured an official speech and exchanges with local representatives.
